14 Islands Countries Endangered Missing

Without efforts to reduce gas emissions, greenhouse gases, mainly carbon-dioxide into the atmosphere, in the long run not only the pattern of life cycle and climate change. The loss of thousands of islands, including 14 island countries in the world, will change the world map.

This disaster caused by rising sea levels due to melting ice at the poles. Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Freddy Numberi in a key speech at the 25th Meeting of The Board of Directors (Governing Council) Environmental Program of the United Nations (UNEP) in Nairobi, Kenya, Monday (16 / 2), recalling the global impact of climate change.

-Gas pollution of greenhouse gases have a real impact on rising sea temperatures, melting polar ice caps, sea level rise, sinking of the islands, and the destruction of coral reefs due to the weakening of pickling and food security of the sea.

Therefore, the meeting was attended by delegates from 136 countries, Freddy invites UNEP raised the issue of marine and climate change and invite the world to come together in the World Ocean Conference (WOC) in Manado in 2009 to agree Manado Ocean Declaration (MOD).

In the meeting which will last until Friday, the delegations led by Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the Governor of North Sulawesi members as Vice Chairman of the Committee Sinyo H WOC Sarundajang, Sesmenko Welfare / Secretary WOC Indroyono Soesilo, Kenya's Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia Budi Bowoleksono, Deputy Minister for LH II Masnellyarti Hilman , Director General of Multilateral Affairs Rezlan Jenie, and Head-DKP BRKP Gelwyn Joseph.

Target Indonesian delegation is reported WOC preparation, Coral Triangle Initiative Summit, and the draft MOD.

Perform other key speech, the Dutch Agriculture Minister Gerda Verburg and the United Nations System Inspector Tadanori Inamata.

Island sink

Indroyono Soesilo added, among participants attending the meeting delegates from the Small Island Development State (SIDS) which expressed willingness to attend the WOC 2009.

They will support the MOD in an effort to deal with mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

An estimated 44 members of SIDS, 14 small countries threatened them lost due to rising sea levels, among other countries in the Pacific Ocean islands, namely Sychelles, Tuvalu, Kiribati, and Palau, and the Maldives in the Indian Ocean.

As a result of global warming, at least 18 islands in the face of this earth has been submerged, including the seven islands of Manus, a province in Papua New Guinea.

Kiribati, the island country with a population of 107,800 people, about 30 islands are currently being drowned, while the three islands have been submerged reefs.

Maldives has a population of 369,000 inhabitants, the president has said it would relocate the entire country. Meanwhile, Vanuatu is inhabited by 212,000 people, some have been evacuated and villages in the coastal relocated

Because the real threat, the delegation from the island nation as well as Algeria and Tanzania is very supportive and will attend WOC in Manado, given the country's endangered missing from this earth due to climate change.

Indonesia itself has the potential to lose the 2000-island in 2030 when no program of mitigation and adaptation to climate change, said Indroyono, who is also former Head of Marine and Fisheries Research DKP.

Green Economy

In the UNEP meeting theme is "Green is the New Deal". Despite the tortured world financial crisis, environmental crisis due to climate change remains more severe impact. Therefore, UNEP introduced a green economy, including food security, biofuels, and working on marine issues raised in the UNEP program, said Indroyono.

Ahiem UNEP Executive Director Steiner said in his speech also expressed support WOC and gives its commitment to bring the results of WOC and MOD at the UNFCCC COP-15 which will be held in Copenhagen, December 2009. (YUN)
