Geospatial News, Jakarta - Toponym study is one of the stages in the series of topographic standardization processes. At the provincial level, toponym analysis aims to examine and add complementary data to data that was previously collected at the district/city level.
On Tuesday, September 17, 2019, the Geospatial Information Agency carried out a Central Level Toponym Study in Jakarta. The activity was attended by representatives from the Provincial Governments of Jambi, Riau and Riau Islands. Over the next four days, a total of 40 participants will be provided with material related to toponymization for further independent review.
Head of BIG Toponym Division Harry Ferdiansyah who opened the activity stated that this activity will produce a list of verified toponyms until they are ready to be standardized in accordance with BIG Head's Regulation Number 6 Year 2017 Concerning Implementation of Topographical Name Standardization.
"The study will be carried out by checking the writing of toponyms including letters and fragments with reference to the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling," explained Harry.
According to Harry, the most troublesome part is recording. This section is needed to anticipate errors in pronunciation of topographical names. Often people mispronounce the topographical name because it does not come from the area so they do not understand the regional element in the topographical name. If this is left unchecked, the name can change permanently and lose its specific meaning.
"Participants will record the pronunciation using the SAKTI application," explained Harry.
SAKTI application (Indonesian Toponym Data Acquisition System) is a mobile and webGIS based application developed by the Geospatial Information Agency. SAKTI aims to facilitate data collection, analysis and, standardization of topographic names in Indonesia. Data uploaded through SAKTI will be owned by BIG as an institution that has the authority to standardize topographical names. (MAD)
