The Government of Timor Leste Dig IG in BIG

Cibinong, Geospatial News - The Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) received an honorary visit from the Ministry of State Administration and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Timor Leste. This group of 10 people intends to explore knowledge related to Geospatial Information (IG), especially thematic maps and toponyms.

"At present Timor Leste is very enthusiastic and is racing to develop the country, especially in the field of HR (human resources) of the state apparatus. Hopefully, the knowledge gained during this visit can be implemented in our country later, especially related to the use of thematic maps as a basis for development, "said East Timor Ministry of Salam staff member Lucio Dearojo in his remarks at the BIG Office, Cibinong, Bogor, Wednesday, 20 November 2019.

Moreover, continued Lucio, at this time Timor Leste was intensively conducting regional autonomy. This will be easier if the government of Timor Leste already has a complete basic map.

The intention of the Timor Leste government was welcomed by BIG. In fact, BIG offers cooperation in the IG field.

"We are ready to provide training for East Timorese who want to learn about Geospatial Information," stressed the Head of the Wiwin Ambarwulan BIG Research Center, Promotion and Cooperation.

On this occasion, the group from Timor Leste also received an explanation about the toponym. Septian Dewi Cahyani from the Center for Mapping the Earth and BIG Toponyms explained various things about the toponym and naming of the earth's appearance.

"Indonesia as the largest archipelago in the world has a diversity of languages. Until now, there have been 668 local languages that continue to be preserved as the rich treasures of Indonesian culture, "explained Dewi.

According to Dewi, one of the efforts to protect it is to use local languages as the basis for making toponyms. Standardization of the name of the earth using this local language is important as disaster mitigation.

"The name of an area has an important role in describing the character of nature to the surrounding culture. If it is not interrelated, it can lead to people who become ahistorical and even have the potential to threaten the safety of the residents concerned, "Dewi explained.

The delegation from the Timor Leste Ministry not only visited BIG while in Indonesia. They also plan to learn about waste management in the Bogor Regency Government and the management of parking lots and green open spaces in the South Tangerang District Government. (FLP / NIN)
