With Participatory Mapping, Communities Develop Regions Independently

Geospatial News, Bogor - All this time, the availability of new geospatial information has been facilitated by government agencies. This makes the availability of geospatial information not yet able to cover the entire territory of Indonesia, especially remote areas. This requires the participation of the community to participate in the process of providing geospatial information.

According to Adi Rusmanto, Deputy for Geospatial Information Infrastructure, the involvement of the community in the process of providing geospatial information has its own advantages. Behind the complexity of the mapping process, people who do the mapping themselves will have full access to the data generated.

"Through participatory mapping, the community is the actor who determines the theme, process, and at the same time acts as a planner for the development of their respective regions," Adi explained when opening the final judging of the 2nd Geo Innovation Bootcamp with the theme "Organizing the Utilization of Our Map Application" in Bogor City, 15 October 2019 .

Adi explained, through the GeoInnovation Bootcamp, BIG was not only looking for the best participants, but the main objective of this activity was to educate the public to know the mapping process so that maps could be produced easily, quickly, and cheaply.

"Despite the fact, these three things are often contradictory," said Adi.

For this reason, BIG will prepare governance, rules, and standards that can be used by the community in participatory mapping.

According to Adi, the effort to popularize the application of Map Kita and participatory mapping also aims to make people aware of their rights and role in the use of geospatial information. Furthermore, by understanding the basics of mapping, it is hoped that the community can make corrections to geospatial information generated by BIG and other geospatial information officers. (MAD)
