BIG Discusses Geospatial and Disaster Information at Unila

Bandar Lampung, Geospatial News - Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) is holding a Geospatial Roadshow at the University of Lampung (Unila) with the theme 'Geospatial Information and Disasters'. This event aims to introduce the importance of geospatial for disaster-prone areas, as well as preparing competent human resources in their fields.

Head of the Thematic Mapping and Thematic Integration Center (PPIT) BIG Lien Rosalina said that Geospatial Information (IG) is currently being used to map disaster-affected areas. "However, in the future a system development is expected to be able to inform potential disaster areas. So, it is able to minimize casualties, "he said when he was a guest speaker at a panel discussion in the Unila Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Hall (FKIP), Bandar Lampung, Friday, February 8, 2019.

Lien said, to be able to understand the disaster management cycle, one must first understand disaster management. At present, regulations related to GIs and disasters have been regulated in Law Number 4 of 2011 concerning IG, Law Number 26 of 2007 concerning Spatial Planning, and Law Number 24 of 2007 concerning Disaster Management.

Based on these regulations, disaster management can be interpreted as any efforts or activities carried out in the framework of prevention, mitigation, preparedness, emergency response, and recovery related to disasters carried out before, during, and after (events) disasters.

"Each stage in the disaster management cycle requires an IG," Lien said.

In the emergency response process, continued Lien, BIG will conduct a rapid mapping of disasters. The resulting map displays information on the level of damage and the affected area. Not only that, the disaster map also provides other important information, such as an inventory of resources, infrastructure (transportation, utilities, and medical), as well as refugee locations.

"The mapping workflow quickly starts with disaster analysis. Then proceed with laboratory analysis, field orientation, UAV photography, data analysis and publication, "explained Lien.

Meanwhile, another guest speaker, Abdurrahman from Unila explained 'Development of Learning Community Empowerment Models to Build Student Awareness, Literacy and Resilience in Disaster Prone Areas'. Based on his research, it is known that the level of disaster preparedness for elementary school students in Pesisir Barat Regency is relatively high.

"The level of disaster literacy of elementary school students in the West Coastal District is also quite high," Abdurrahman said.

Disaster literacy is very important as an effort to minimize disaster risk. With the right understanding, one knows what to do when disaster strikes. Disasters do not occur every day, so there is a need for preparedness.

The final material presented by Listumbinang about the profile of Unila Spatial Data Infrastructure Development Center (PPIDS). "PPIDS has available training studios and map center rooms. We have also conducted GIS training for Metro City Bappeda; review of critical land maps 2009-2013; mapping land cover, forest potential, and plantations; RDTR Sidomulyo District; mapping the potential of fisheries; disaster mapping; and making Web GIS Bappeda Kab. Waykanan, "he explained. (LR / NIN)
